The mass circulation in newspapers was based on ways to capture readers attention of readers. They began using sensational headlines for example they used stories such as Horrors on Johns town, Pennsylvania flood in 1889 where 2,000 people were killed they used the headline "VALLEY OF DEATH". Joseph Pulitzer who bought the New york worldin 1883 was a Hungarian immigrant who pioneered popular editions such as the large Sunday edition, comics, sports, and women's news. His papers also emphasized 'Sin,Sex, and Sensation". Randolph Hearst who bought New york morning journal in 1895. Hearst who also owned San Francisco examiner,sought to beat Pulitzer by filling his journal with tales of personal scandals, cruelty, hypnotism and imaginary conquests to mars with over exaggeration. Their competition drew both newspapers into sensational news coverage. By 1898 there papers reached more than 1 million copies a day
